Speech intelligibility in noise : modelling hearing impairment and hearing aid benefit
The main goal of the Ph.D. project is to better understand how the different aspects of hearing loss affect the perceptual mechanisms related to speech intelligibility in noise. To address this goal, a speech intelligibility model will be developed and predictions will be compared to data measured in a range of critical conditions with normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners. Thereby, existing datasets will be used as well as new data will be collected. The model will be based on a preliminary model from the literature and systematically modified to get to a version that is able to accurately predict speech intelligibly for an individual hearing-impaired listener wearing his/her hearing aids in realistic noisy situations. Hence, the model will provide a validated instrumental measure of the effects of both hearing loss and hearing aids on speech intelligibility in noise.
