Flow and mixing in curved pipe: in relation to ultrasound therapy of iliac endofibrosis
Endofibrosis of the external iliac artery is an uncommon disease affecting primarily
young, otherwise healthy, endurance athletes. The mechanisms of its development are still poorly understood. One hypothesis of causality is that high shear stress due to the tortuosity of EIA cause the pathology.
This work is to characterize the flow generated in a curved vessel model in terms of shear rate, shear stress, vortex and velocity distribution, using the implementation of an LDV system (Laser Doppler Velocimetry) for field measurements of the three velocity components.
The experimental results are compared with numerical simulations carried out under OpenFOAM.
The idea is to approach the physiological configuration of iliac endofibrosis
(pulsed flow, curved vessel, possible presence of a stenosis), in order to study the possible action of ultrasound therapy.
