Condition monitoring methods for gearboxes operating under time-varying conditions

Gearboxes found in wind turbines and in mining environments operate inherently under time-varying operating conditions. The time-varying operating conditions impede the performance of many conventional condition monitoring methods. It is important to find condition monitoring methods that are reliable and feasible for rotating machines operating under time-varying operating conditions. In this presentation, some techniques will be discussed to mitigate the influences of time-varying operating conditions and also to effectively utilise the prior knowledge we have for performing condition monitoring.

Stephan Schmidt is currently a lecturer at the University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa. He did his PhD under the supervision of Professor P Stephan Heyns at the same university with his thesis titled: Development of effective gearbox fault diagnosis methodologies utilising various levels of prior knowledge. He is interested in the diagnosis and prognosis of rotating machines.
