In this talk I will provide an overview of my research activities in computational acoustic and aeroacoustics, particularly using hybrid numerical methods such computational fluid dynamics (CFD)- boundary element method (BEM). An efficient boundary element method for periodic structures will be introduced and some of its applications in flow-induced noise prediction will be discussed.

Dr Mahmoud Karimi is a Senior Lecturer at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and an adjunct Lecturer at University of New South Wales (UNSW). Mahmoud received his PhD from UNSW and his Master’s degree from Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST) in Mechanical Engineering. He has been a visiting researcher at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), University of Cambridge in the UK and at the Chair of vibroacoustics of Vehicles and Machines, Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany. Prior starting his PhD, Mahmoud worked for MAPNA Turbine Engineering & Manufacturing Company for 5 years. He was in charge of a variety of tasks including high-speed balancing of flexible rotors, test and control of CNC machine tools, condition monitoring of machine tools and fatigue/endurance test of turbine and compressor blades. His research interests are in computational acoustics and aeroacoustics, flow-induced noise and vibrations, and uncertainty quantification in mechanical systems.
