Hippos recognize each other by voice
As planet Earth becomes increasingly inhospitable to large animals, learning more about their habits is essential to their preservation. Field research shows that the hippopotamus, an African megaherbivore of major importance to ecosystems, uses voice recognition to manage relationships between territorial groups. This study was carried out in the Maputo Special Reserve in Mozambique by scientists from the University of Saint-Etienne, the University of Lisbon and the CNRS1 , with the financial participation of the CeLyA research group. These results have just been published in the journal Current Biology.
